Travel to the North Shore to search for coastal birds we typically see only in the colder months. We'll visit multiple birding hot spots around the Newburyport area, including Salisbury Beach State Reservation where we'll look for Crossbills, Snow Buntings, Horned Larks, and birds of prey in the campground, roadsides, and adjacent salt marsh. The Reservation's ocean side should yield winter sea ducks, loons, and possibly grebes. Next stop is the Merrimack River in Newburyport, a typically active winter birding site for Common Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser, Long-tailed Duck, and Bald Eagle. Our final destination is Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island where we'll have another chance to scan the ocean for scoters, and the marshes for eagles, Rough-legged Hawks, and Snowy Owls. Most birding will be done during short walks over packed snow.
