Learn about the wide variety of shorebirds that visit our tidal flats, beaches, salt marshes, and other wetlands. We'll discuss physical adaptations (demonstrated with the use of study skins), aids to field identification, migration patterns and timing, age distribution, nesting and foraging behaviors, and conservation issues that impact these marvelous and diverse birds. Target species include local breeders such as the Willet, Killdeer, and Piping Plover, as well as migrants such as Least, Semipalmated, White-rumped, Stilt, and other sandpipers, along with Semipalmated and Black-bellied plovers. We'll also tease out Dowitchers and look for grassland specialties such as Whimbrels and Buff-breasted Sandpipers.
