Thankful for Beavers Hike

Description

Add the tree-cutting, dam-building, landscape-changing beaver to your gratitude list this year.

In late November, beavers are racing to stockpile food and fortify their lodges before winter, meaning the trail will be full of fresh evidence to find and interpret. A naturalist will guide you through reading beaver signs (dams, lodges, canals, scent posts, chewed stumps, and the gnawed twigs nicknamed 'snack sticks'), while sharing the remarkable history of Pleasant Valley's role in the reintroduction of beavers to Massachusetts in the 1930s.

You'll leave with a deeper appreciation for how beavers work as a keystone species, improving watersheds and supporting biodiversity across the region.

This hike covers up to 1.5 miles on unsurfaced trails that can be uneven, hilly, muddy, or wet; trekking poles are recommended and beaver activity may require navigating seasonally flooded areas or stepping over fallen logs. Note that this route is not stroller-friendly; a child carrier is recommended for infants.

If inclement weather could affect your program, you will receive an email the day before via email.
