Cape Cod Bird Sightings — Tuesday, September 8, 2026

Cape Cod Weekly Wildlife Sightings is sponsored by the Bird Watchers General Store in Orleans and Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The following sightings were reported between September 2 and September 8, 2026.

The Crested Caracara was rediscovered at Duck Harbor in Wellfleet on Sunday and last seen on Monday.

Sightings of up to 3 Swallow-tailed Kites continued in Mashpee and Cotuit this week.

Birds at Race Point/Hatches Harbor in Provincetown included a Sabine’s Gull, a Little Gull, 7 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 425 Roseate Terns, 23 Black Terns, a Pomarine Jaeger, 4 Parasitic Jaegers, 70 Wilson’s Storm-Petrels, 15 Cory’s Shearwaters, 3 Great Shearwaters, 10 Manx Shearwaters, a Great Cormorant, and a Red-necked Grebe.

Birds in Nauset Marsh in Eastham included an American Golden-Plover, a Wilson’s Phalarope, a Baird’s Sandpiper, 400 Semipalmated Plovers, 10 Western Sandpipers, a Pectoral Sandpiper, 12 Hudsonian Whimbrels, 40 White-rumped Sandpipers, 120 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 3 Glossy Ibis, 67 Snowy Egrets, 34 Great Egrets, a Northern Waterthrush, and a Dickcissel.

Birds at Bell’s Neck Conservation Area in West Harwich included a continuing and cooperative Clapper Rail, a Tricolored Heron, a Little Blue Heron, 5 Green Herons, and a Marsh Wren.

Migrants noted at Sandy Neck in Barnstable on the 6th included 800 Black-bellied Plovers, 1500 Semipalmated Plovers, 200 Sanderlings, a Western Sandpiper, 250 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 30 Forster’s Terns, 50 Roseate Terns, a Pied-billed Grebe, 25 Snowy Egrets, 30 Great Egrets, 15 Great Blue Herons, and 9 Eastern Phoebes.

Other sightings around the Cape included a Little Blue Heron at Long Pasture sanctuary in Cummaquid, a Long-tailed Jaeger and a Black Tern at First Encounter Beach in Eastham, and an Iceland Gull and a Black Guillemot in North Truro.
