Cape Cod Bird Sightings — Tuesday, September 1, 2026
Cape Cod Weekly Wildlife Sightings is sponsored by the Bird Watchers General Store in Orleans and Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The following sightings were reported between August 26 and September 1, 2026.
A Crested Caracara was photographed during a bird walk at Wellfleet Bay sanctuary on the 27th, possibly the bird seen in in Provincetown in July.
The family of Swallow-tailed Kites, including two adults and two recently fledged juveniles being fed by continued in Mashpee and Cotuit.
Birds at Race Point in Provincetown included a Buff-breasted Sandpiper, 4 Red Phalaropes, 8 Red-necked Phalaropes, 9 Black Terns, 400 Roseate Terns, and 11 Wilson’s-Storm-Petrels.
Birds in Nauset Marsh in Eastham included 10 American Oystercatchers, 1000 Semipalmated Plovers, 4 Hudsonian Godwits, a Marbled Godwit, 3 Hudsonian Whimbrels, 40 White-rumped Sandpipers, 5 Western Sandpipers, 2 Pectoral Sandpipers, 120 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 10 Forster’s Terns, 25 Rosete Terns, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, 2 Peregrine Falcons, and a Cliff Swallow.
A survey of a remote part of Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge turned up 7 Blue-winged Teal, 12 Gadwall, 127 American Black Duck, 6 Green-winged Teal, 5 Ruddy Ducks, 5 American Oystercatchers, 3 Hudsonian Godwits, 5 Red Knots, 2 American Coot, and 3 Pied-billed Grebes.
Birds at Bell’s Neck Conservation Area in West Harwich included an unusually cooperative Clapper Rail a Tricolored Heron, a Little Blue Heron, 5 Green Herons, and a Marsh Wren.
A Lark Sparrow was found at High Head in Truro and other sightings around the Cape included a summering Harlequin Duck in Falmouth, a Little Blue Heron at Long Pasture sanctuary in Cummaquid, 2 Marbled Godwits in Chatham, and a Yellow-throated Vireo and a Philadelphia Vireo at High Head in Truro.
