Cape Cod Bird Sightings — Tuesday, December 23, 2025
Cape Cod Weekly Wildlife Sightings is sponsored by the Bird Watchers General Store in Orleans and Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The following sightings were reported between December 17 and December 23, 2025.
A Black-throated Gray Warbler was found in Falmouth during the Buzzard’s Bay Christmas Bird Count on the 20th.
A Western Tanager was found near Salt Pond in Eastham and yet another at Crane WMA in Falmouth last week. Other birds found at Crane included a Short-eared Owl, a Clay-colored Sparrow, and a Northern Shrike.
The male Painted Bunting continued at a feeder in Brewster this week.
Highlights from the Mid-Cape Christmas Bird Count on Sunday included a Snowy Owl, a Barred Owl, and a Short-eared Owl in different parts of Dennis, 4 Northern Saw-whet Owls in Barnstable, a Baltimore Oriole in West Barnstable, 2 Semipalmated Plovers and 3 Red Knots at Sandy Neck, and a Saltmarsh Sparrow and 2 Nelson’s Sparrows in West Barnstable.
Birds at Race Point in Provincetown included a Pacific Loon, 600 White-winged Scoters, 400 Black Scoters, 250 Red-breasted Mergansers, 250 Razorbills, a Dovekie, a Common Murre, 9 Black-legged Kittiwakes, 3 Iceland Gulls, 13 Snow Buntings, and 14 Horned Larks.
Other sightings around the Cape included an Ovenbird along the canal in Sandwich, 2 continuing Eurasian Wigeon in Yarmouth Port, up to 3 Barrow’s Goldeneyes at Loop Beach in Cotuit, a Great Egret in Centerville, 2 Black-headed Gulls at Ocean Ave Beach in Hyannis plus another at nearby Wequaquet Lake, continuing unseasonably large numbers of Tree Swallows various places including over 50 in Mashpee and 37 in Chatham, 2 continuing Western Willets in Chatham, 7 Red Crossbills in Brewster plus one in Dennis, 2 Evening Grosbeaks in North Truro, and a Bohemian Waxwing and 2 Black Vultures in Provincetown.
