Cape Cod Bird Sightings — Tuesday, August 5, 2025
Cape Cod Weekly Wildlife Sightings is sponsored by the Bird Watchers General Store in Orleans and Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The following sightings were reported between July 30 and August 5, 2025.
At least 2 Swallow-tailed Kites continue in the Cotuit area this week.
A Brown Booby and an Atlantic Puffin were seen at Race Point in Provincetown, where other sightings this week included a Pomarine Jaeger, 2500 Common Terns, 200 Roseate Terns, 130 Cory’s Shearwaters, 57 Great Shearwaters, 3 Sooty Shearwaters, and 12 Manx Shearwaters.
Surveys of Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge tallied 15 American Oystercatchers, 20 Piping Plovers, 2 Hudsonian Godwits, a Marbled Godwit, 2000 Short-billed Dowitchers, 200 Ruddy Turnstones, 150 Red Knots, 2 Silt Sandpipers, 5000 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 2000 Laughing Gulls, 2 Black Skimmers, a Black Tern, 3000 Common Terns, and 50 Snowy Egrets.
Birds at Wellfleet Bay sanctuary this week included a continuing American Golden-Plover, 18 Whimbrel, 11 Forster’s Terns, and a Northern Waterthush.
Other sightings around the Cape included 2 Blue Grosbeaks in Falmouth, a Seaside Sparrow in Cummaquid, a Glaucous Gull and a Little Blue Heron in Chatham, at least one endlessly continuing Chuck-Will’s-widow in Eastham, and several South Polar Skuas seen during offshore surveys in the vicinity of George’s Bank.
