Winter Birding: Ducks, Loons & Grebes

Description

Winter opens up a different chapter in Cape Cod birding. Ducks, alcids, and grebes pour into the Outer Cape's open waters once cold weather settles in, turning spots like Macmillan Wharf in Provincetown into some of the best waterfowl watching in the region.

Working alongside a Wellfleet Bay naturalist, you'll identify winter waterfowl by shape, behavior, and habitat. Learn to tell dabbling ducks from diving ducks, sort loons from cormorants, and pick out the cold-weather specialties that only appear here in winter. You'll also discover the adaptations that help these birds thrive in conditions that send most species south, and how conservation work supports waterfowl populations.
