Description
Winter opens up a different chapter in Cape Cod birding. Ducks, loons, and grebes pour into the Outer Cape's open waters once cold weather settles in, turning spots like Herring Pond in Eastham into some of the best waterfowl watching in the region.
On this guided walk, you'll work alongside a Wellfleet Bay naturalist to identify winter waterfowl by shape, behavior, and habitat, learning to distinguish dabbling ducks from diving ducks, sort loons from cormorants, and pick out cold-weather specialties that only appear here in winter. You'll also discover the remarkable adaptations that help these birds thrive in conditions that send most species south and learn how ongoing conservation efforts support waterfowl populations.
Come prepared to carpool to additional nearby sites as the morning unfolds.
