Description
In late summer, Wellfleet Bay's salt marshes come alive as Diamondback Terrapin hatchlings—one of Massachusetts' state-threatened species—begin to emerge from their sandy nests. Join a trained terrapin nesting technician for a guided walk into their remarkable habitat, where you'll search for signs of hatchling activity and gain insight into the fascinating life cycle of these unique turtles.
Along the way, you'll discover how Mass Audubon is working to protect terrapins and the fragile salt marsh ecosystems they depend on. With a bit of luck, you may even assist in collecting hatchlings for monitoring or safe release—an unforgettable, hands-on conservation experience. The walk covers up to 2 miles at a comfortable pace.
