Search for Diamondback Terrapins by Kayak

Description

Great Island is one of the most dramatic and remote stretches of coastline on mainland Cape Cod—a three-mile barrier beach and island system where Wellfleet Harbor meets Cape Cod Bay and the state-threatened diamondback terrapin makes its home.

On this guided kayak, you'll paddle through the salt marsh alongside an experienced Wellfleet Bay naturalist and paddler, searching both the water and the shoreline for terrapins while learning about the species' remarkable natural history and the conservation work Mass Audubon is doing to protect them. Along the way, you'll explore the ongoing salt marsh restoration work and stop at one of Great Island's beautiful remote beaches for a rest and a snack.

Please arrive 10 minutes before the program begins. Note that the end time for kayak trips is approximate-wind, tides, and varying experience levels may cause the trip to run longer than scheduled. Please plan accordingly.

Participants may choose from available single kayaks or bring their own. All equipment is provided; life jackets must be worn at all times.

We recommend bringing a windbreaker, hat, and water. There are no restrooms or water fountains at the meeting location.
