Field School: Whales & Seals-Science, Sightings & Shorelines

Description

Cape Cod's rich waters support majestic baleen whales, swift dolphins, and thriving populations of gray and harbor seals—offering exceptional opportunities to observe marine mammals in their natural environment. Immerse yourself in their world as you uncover remarkable diving adaptations, feeding strategies, communication, and breeding behaviors.

Begin Friday afternoon with a dynamic presentation that introduces the region's diverse marine mammals and traces how human relationships with these animals have evolved over time. Then explore the sanctuary's Try Island, learning about local whaling history.

Start Saturday by traveling to Truro to walk along the beach and observe a seal colony hauled out along the shore. Watch their interactions, study their behavior, and launch your own field journal to record observations and questions like a marine scientist. Deepen your understanding of marine mammal science and conservation during a visit to the Center for Coastal Studies Hiebert Marine Laboratory in Provincetown. Stand before the fully articulated skeleton of Spinnaker, a 34-foot humpback whale, and learn the powerful story behind her life and legacy. Explore current research initiatives and discover how you can actively support ocean conservation.

On Sunday, head out onto the water for a harbor exploration and offshore whale watch. Scan the horizon for blows, flukes, and breaching giants as you witness these extraordinary animals in person—an unforgettable highlight of the weekend.

We tailor the schedule and choose locations based on weather and tides to maximize wildlife sightings and ensure the most rewarding experience possible. Come ready to move, observe, question, and connect deeply with the marine life of Cape Cod.
