Field School: Coastal Waterfowl & Seabirds of Cape Cod
Description
As temperatures drop on Cape Cod, quiet beaches, star-filled nights, and thousands of wintering ducks and seabirds transform the landscape. Jump right in on Friday afternoon with a guided waterfowl birding adventure across the sanctuary's diverse habitats. After dinner, sharpen your skills during an in-depth evening session where you'll learn to distinguish dabbling ducks from diving ducks, compare loons and cormorants, and identify cold-weather specialties by shape, behavior, and habitat.
On Saturday, rise with the birds and spend the day exploring the Cape on a series of field trips to the beautiful ponds that dot the mid and lower Cape. Search for winter visitors such as Long-tailed Ducks and Hooded Mergansers, scan ice-free waters teeming with life, and build your identification confidence in the field before wrapping up in the afternoon.
On Sunday, turn your focus to seabirds as you explore prime Outer Cape locations—from sheltered harbors to Cape Cod Bay and the open Atlantic—in search of Northern Gannets, scoters, eiders, alcids, and more. Conclude your weekend adventure in the afternoon with a deeper understanding of the species that define the Cape's winter waters. Along the way, discover how conservation efforts actively support waterfowl populations—and learn practical ways you can make a difference.
We tailor the schedule to current sightings, weather, and tides to ensure the most productive and rewarding birding opportunities possible. Guided by Mass Audubon's expert educators and naturalists, you'll experience a dynamic, supportive field school that welcomes beginners and offers seasoned birders the chance to expand their life lists.
