Field School: Hidden Cape Cod - A Fall Hiking Weekend

Description

Explore the Outer Cape at one of its most peaceful and beautiful times of year on immersive, extended hikes through pine woods, kettle ponds, secluded beaches, and sweeping dunes. Discover hidden corners of Cape Cod as you pause for birds, wildlife, expansive coastal views, and the rich natural and cultural history that shapes this landscape. Step off the beaten path, cover new ground, and experience the Cape in a way few visitors ever do.

Begin at the sanctuary at 10:00 am on Saturday, where you'll meet your group, review the weekend's adventure, and set out for Truro. Hike along dramatic bluffs and wild outer beaches while learning how conservation efforts actively protect and strengthen biodiversity across the Cape. After a well-earned dinner break, return to Wellfleet Bay for a memorable sunset walk that caps off your first day.

On Sunday, venture into lesser-known landscapes, including an area once home to a thriving fishing community and now defined by quiet shorelines and layered history. Explore these hidden spaces on foot before wrapping up the weekend in the afternoon.

Plan for invigorating, steady walks on varied terrain—hard-packed trails, soft sand, rolling hills, and shifting dunes—covering approximately five miles each day. We tailor the schedule and select locations based on the weekend's weather and tides to ensure you enjoy the most rewarding outings possible. Come ready to move, discover, and see the Outer Cape in a whole new light.
