Field School: Hatching Diamondback Terrapins

Description

Witness one of Cape Cod's most remarkable moments as tiny Diamondback Terrapins emerge from their sandy marsh-side nests. Saturday starts with an engaging presentation that introduces this fascinating species and shares insights from more than 30 years of conservation research at Wellfleet Bay.

In the afternoon, head into the field to search for adult terrapins in their natural habitat. We'll wade into the water to locate and tag adult turtles. In the evening monitor nests above the tide line for signs of hatching, weigh and measure hatchlings, and document nesting success.

On Sunday, start early with an 8:00 am nest check. Look for newly emerged hatchlings and work alongside sanctuary scientists to weigh, measure, and document them. Then spend the day on Great Island searching for nesting sites and protecting them from predators, wrapping up in the afternoon.

We'll adjust the schedule to match the best opportunities to find terrapins, basing our plans on sightings, weather, and tides so you experience the most rewarding outings possible. Guided by Mass Audubon's expert educators and naturalists, you'll take part in a dynamic, supportive field school that immerses you in the world of this threatened species at the northern edge of its range.

Take your adventure to the next level by staying at Wellfleet Bay Campground, enjoying easy access to our meeting location, and extending your time exploring the beauty of the Outer Cape. Book your reservation at massaudubon.org/wellfleetcampground
