Field School: Coastal Birding for Beginners

Description

Spring ignites the Outer Cape with bird life—from northbound warblers and hawks to shorebirds fueling up along the flats. Spend the weekend exploring beaches, salt marshes, forests, and fields as you actively build your birding skills—spotting birds with confidence, identifying species by sight and song, and understanding the traits that help them thrive along the coast. Arrive Friday afternoon to settle in at the sanctuary, sharpen your observation skills, and learn practical tips and tools before heading out on an evening adventure in search of American Woodcock and Eastern Whip-poor-will.

On Saturday, rise early for an 8:00 am bird banding demonstration and watch scientists safely capture, band, and release migratory songbirds as part of a long-running effort to monitor populations on Cape Cod. Train your ear to recognize distinctive songs, then head to top birding hotspots across the Outer Cape. End the day with a presentation by Lorna Gibson, MIT engineer and author of 'Birds Up Close,' revealing the marvels of how birds work—from their beak tips to shiny tail feathers. On Sunday, put your newly honed skills into action during field trips to diverse habitats, each offering the chance to encounter standout species—from soaring hawks to busy shorebirds.

We'll adapt the schedule to match the best birding opportunities based on sightings, weather, and tides, ensuring you experience the most rewarding outings possible. Guided by Mass Audubon's expert educators and naturalists, you'll enjoy a dynamic, supportive field school that welcomes beginners and offers seasoned birders a valuable refresher.
