Beavers in the Berkshires

Description

Pleasant Valley's wetlands have been shaped by generations of beavers and the results are all around us. On this naturalist-guided 1.5-mile hike, you'll explore areas with strong beaver influence while learning how to interpret beaver signs and what they reveal.

You'll also hear the remarkable story of Pleasant Valley's role in beaver conservation and reintroduction in Massachusetts. If conditions are right, you may spot beavers and other wetland wildlife during the quieter late afternoon hours.

Instructions

Meet in front of the red barn at Pleasant Valley on the side facing the wide gravel path. Dress for the weather, bring your own binoculars or borrow a loaner pair from us, and consider trekking poles if you typically use them on uneven ground.

Expect up to 1.5 miles of unsurfaced trail with a mix of flat ground, gradual slopes, and one or two hills; exposed roots and rocks are common, recent weather may make the trail muddy, wet, or slippery, and recent beaver activity or storms could require stepping over fallen logs.
