Birds Beyond Identification - Owls

Whether you have just dipped your toe into the world of birding or are looking for more reasons to enjoy some of your favorite birds, this program takes a deeper dive into the local avian community. We will start each session with a seasonally focused indoor presentation on topics such as bird physiology, life cycles, unique adaptations and the evolutionary influences on habitat that birds provide. Our introductory presentation will be followed by an outdoor field session to apply what we covered.

The striking physical appearance, amazing adaptations, and unique behaviors of owls have inspired centuries of mystery and legend across cultures. Populating all but one continent, owls often introduce people to the fascinating lives of birds and the nocturnal world. We will focus on the eight owl species found in Massachusetts and their significance in local habitats. Learn the best times, locations, and methods for observing owls, and how to identify them by sight and sound.
