Sustainable Landscaping Certificate Program
Description
Build knowledge, develop skills, and take your next steps towards ecologically sustainable landscaping and gardening. Whether you have a small strip of lawn you want to convert to a more natural space, or you hope to invite butterflies and birds to a community park, this is the program for you! You will learn to create a sustainable and ecologically beneficial patch of land-whether it's 10 inches or 10 acres.
Seven bi-weekly online class sessions will cover topics such as: sustainable landscapes, biodiversity and evolutionary biology, and designing and planning a sustainable landscape project. Once the weather warms in the spring, you will take your learning outdoors for the remaining four sessions as you visit sustainably landscaped areas-and create your own. There will also be opportunities to help with some of Mass Audubon's sustainable landscaping work at sanctuary sites.
The program will continue meeting through October so everyone can share about their projects, get support and coaching, and learn how to prepare gardens and landscapes for winter.
Through certification, you will:
- Gain instruction, assignments and resources about sustainable landscaping, gardening and residential scale ecological restoration.
- Develop a strong understanding of the local impact of climate change and how residential-scale sustainable gardens can help address these impacts to support wildlife and biodiversity.
- Join a shared learning community.
- Enjoy opportunities for hands-on learning at some of Mass Audubon's sustainable landscapes, as well as support in planning your own project, with scheduled check-ins with classmates and coaching from the instructors.
Upon completion, you will receive a certificate. Additional documentation can be provided for participants who need it for PDP credits, employee reimbursement, or other requirements.
