Description
Southeast Arizona is one of the best birdwatching destinations in North America. Our itinerary includes hiking up eye-catching mountain canyons, scanning vast grasslands and watering holes, and visiting beautiful state parks and stunning national forests. We will search for winter specialties such as Ferruginous Hawk, Prairie Falcon, Crested Caracara, Golden Eagle, Mountain Plover, Long-billed Curlew, Rosy-faced Lovebird, and Bendire's, Sage, and Crissal thrashers.
One of the trip's many highlights will surely be visiting Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area to see thousands of Sandhill Cranes foraging in the shallow wetlands, along with a variety of waterfowl and shorebirds. In Patagonia, we will visit the famous Paton Center for Hummingbirds to look for Anna's and Violet-crowned hummingbirds, along with a number of sparrows, finches, and woodpeckers. We will also keep an eye on the rare bird alerts and search for any rarities from Mexico that have traveled north. In the winter of 2024, participants on this trip observed nearly 160 species.
