Fall Birding in South Carolina's Lowcountry

Description

Along the coast, from Charleston to the Georgia border, lies a 100-mile strand of seashore, salt marsh, and maritime forest that makes up what is known as South Carolina's Lowcountry. Here, tens of thousands of acres of salt marsh, a network of tidal rivers and creeks, and surrounding upland habitats attract an amazing array of birdlife. Throughout the fall, waterfowl and shorebirds along the coast combine with regional specialties like Brown-headed Nuthatch, Carolina Chickadee, White-eyed Vireo, and large numbers of wading birds to make for some wonderful Lowcountry birding.

Among our destinations are the longleaf pine woodlands of James W. Webb Wildlife Center, where we'll look for Red-headed and Red-cockaded woodpeckers. We’ll also visit the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge freshwater impoundments that provide terrific views of a range of waterfowl including southern residents Black-bellied Whistling and Mottled ducks.

A special private boat trip with Coastal Expeditions into the waters around Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge will no doubt be a highlight. From the boat we’ll view thousands of wintering waterbirds including American Oystercatchers and Black Skimmers. So grab your binoculars and camera and join us for an unforgettable Lowcountry birding experience!
