Nature of Winter: Sea Turtle Rescue

Description

In late fall, sea turtles that linger in Cape Cod Bay succumb to dropping water temperatures, become cold-stunned, and wash ashore on bayside beaches. Since the 70s, Mass Audubon staff and volunteers have rescued thousands of turtles in this condition.

Explore the sea turtle species found in Massachusetts waters, learn why cold-stunning happens, and get a behind-the-scenes look at the rescue process. These juvenile turtles are also a rare research opportunity for scientists worldwide, so you will hear what recent stranding data and necropsies have revealed about a turtle life stage that was barely studied until now.

This program is part of the online Nature of Winter Series. Each session stands alone, but if you register for the series before it begins, you get all four sessions for the price of three.
