Tea from the Sidewalk? Ground Cover Plants and How to Use Them

Description

The plants growing in the cracks of sidewalks and strips of grass along the road are more than just weeds! Learn to identify common ground cover plants including red clover, broadleaf plantain, ground ivy, and wood sorrel, exploring how communities near and far have relied on these unassuming plants for food and medicine for centuries. We'll also discuss the ecological roles these plants play in the local landscape, and how to safely and responsibly gather them.

After the walk, we'll brew and share an herbal tea made from a selection of plants we collected. This program explores how building a relationship with the natural world can support health and a deeper sense of place.

Please note that collecting plants on DCR properties is not generally permitted. This is a special opportunity for our group to carefully gather some wild plants under the guidance of a naturalist.
