Description
Bird banding is one of the most vital tools in migration research, and you can experience it firsthand. At Joppa Flats' banding station on Parker River National Wildlife Refuge in Newburyport, Mass Audubon scientists safely capture migrating songbirds with specially designed nets, collect data on each bird, attach a uniquely numbered band, and release the bird unharmed.
During this special visit to the banding station, learn about migration ecology, habitat use, and what scientists can discover from decades of banding data, including how shifting migration patterns reflect the effects of climate change. The station operates only during the peak of spring and fall migration.
