Description
When the days shorten and northwest winds pick up, the skies over Essex County fill with one of nature's great spectacles: hawk migration. Thousands of hawks, eagles, vultures, and falcons harness the wind's energy as they fly south toward wintering grounds in the southern United States, the Caribbean, and Central America—and a well-positioned hilltop is one of the best places in the world to watch them go.
During this outing near West Newbury, an experienced guide shares field identification tips and life history for the most common species, helping you distinguish a Broad-winged Hawk from a Cooper's Hawk from a Merlin as they pass overhead. Learn where these birds come from, where they're going, and exactly what to look for when the next kettle spirals up over the tree line.
