Description
A large majority of the woodlands in Massachusetts are second growth forest, meaning the original trees were cut down at some point. Today, most forests in eastern Massachusetts are young second growth with trees around 100 years old. However, the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary is home to trees that are nearly 200 years old, some of the oldest second growth forest in Essex County. Walk among these giants and look and listen for wildlife with a Mass Audubon naturalist. Along the way, also learn about the interesting cultural history of the sanctuary.
