Description
At dusk in early spring, male American Woodcocks put on one of the most unique courtship displays in New England.
Listen for a series of nasal peent calls from the ground, then watch the bird launch and spiral upward, sometimes nearly 300 feet, before zigzagging back down like a falling leaf. When a male takes flight, you will walk toward the spot he left to see whether a female has come in to meet him. Observe this impressive display and discuss the many unique adaptations of this curious little shorebird.
