Birding the Connecticut Coast

Description

Experience one of the Northeast's most treasured birding spots during the height of fall migration. Located on the Long Island Sound, globally-recognized Important Bird Area Hammonasset Beach and neighboring Barn Island boast sweeping tidal marshes, sandy beaches, and idyllic grasslands. The diverse habitats attract shorebirds and wading birds, some of which can be hard to locate in Massachusetts, such as Little Blue Heron, Clapper Rail, American Golden-plover, Whimbrel, American Oystercatcher, and Pectoral Sandpiper. Vast open areas are perfect for viewing Peregrine Falcons, Merlins, American Kestrels, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Northern Harriers, and other raptors migrating along the coast. Migrating songbirds also flock to nearby patches of mixed woodland.

We will walk approximately 3-4 miles throughout the day with frequent breaks and stop for lunch at a local restaurant (not included in price).
