Winter Birding at Great Meadows

Description

Winter is a surprisingly active time of year as migratory waterfowl settle down in Massachusetts for the season. Explore the expansive wetlands of Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord with a naturalist to look for migratory and resident ducks like Wood Ducks, Northern Shovelers, and Blue-winged Teal in their vibrant breeding plumage, as well as Snow Buntings, Golden-crowned Kinglets, and more arboreal species as they begin their courtship rituals.

Learn what adaptations let birds hold their body heat through frigid weather and how migration patterns shift as the season turns. Getting familiar with migration patterns is a crucial step towards supporting biodiversity in every season.
