Description
Situated along a coastal corridor that attracts migrating birds in droves, Hammonasset Beach State Park and neighboring Barn Island are among the Northeast's most celebrated birding destinations for a reason. These globally recognized Important Bird Areas offer sweeping tidal marshes, sandy beaches, and open grasslands that attract an extraordinary diversity of species.
Venture out with a guide to look for shorebirds and wading birds that can be difficult to find in Massachusetts, including Little Blue Heron, Clapper Rail, American Golden-Plover, Whimbrel, and American Oystercatcher.
The vast open habitats are ideal for watching Peregrine Falcons, Merlins, American Kestrels, Sharp-shinned Hawks, and Northern Harriers stream past, while nearby patches of mixed woodland harbor migrating songbirds. There are always bound to be surprises mixed in with the gorgeous coastal scenery.

Instructions
Meet at Drumlin Farm, where we will travel together in Mass Audubon vans. We will stop for lunch (not included in the program fee) at a location to be determined depending on which species we target. Participants are also welcome to bring their own lunch. Bring binoculars (or ask in advance to borrow a pair of ours), sun protection, good walking shoes, water, and snacks. Trip leaders will have spotting scopes. Plan for approximately 3-4 miles of walking throughout the day, with plenty of rest stops along the route.
