Lichens in the Field

Description

As leafy plants go dormant in the winter, lichens take center stage! Explore the often-overlooked world of lichens that grow on bark, logs, soil, and rocks, playing a crucial role in our ecosystems. Take a guided walk around the sanctuary and learn how to identify common types in the field. By slowing down and looking closely, you'll discover the incredible variety of lichens all around us, hiding in plain sight.

Instructions

Meet at the nature center. Dress accordingly for the weather, wear appropriate footwear for hiking. Bring a hand lens (at least 10x) if you have one, or borrow one of ours. A notepad and close-focusing digital camera or smart phone, if you have one, are also useful. We will mostly be outdoors; the paths we will take will have gentle inclines and may have roots or puddles.
