Vernal Pool and Wetland Exploration at Stony Brook Reservation (DCR)
Description
Discover the hidden world of vernal pools and wetlands at Stony Brook Reservation in West Roxbury! Alongside an Educator from Zoo New England's Conservation department, you'll get an inside look at their ongoing research and visit their active projects in the field.
Vernal pools, which are temporary ponds that form each spring from melting snow, are thriving ecosystems teeming with life. Spring is their most spectacular season: salamanders and frogs lay their eggs in the shallows, while dragonflies complete their remarkable transformation from water-dwelling nymphs into soaring insects. These fleeting habitats are critical for countless plant and animal species, making every visit a chance to witness something truly extraordinary.
This event is co-sponsored with Zoo New England's Field Conservation Department.
