Birds in Winter

Description

How do chickadees survive nights when temperatures plunge below zero? Why do some birds flee south while others thrive in the snow? Massachusetts winters are brutal, yet dozens of bird species not only endure them, but flourish.

You'll uncover the remarkable survival strategies that make this possible. From the clever caching techniques of nuthatches to the specialized feathers that trap warmth, these adaptations are nothing short of extraordinary. We'll explore which species migrate, which stay put, and the surprising reasons behind their choices.

Then we'll put theory into practice. On our guided trail walk, you'll spot winter residents in action, foraging, communicating, and demonstrating the very behaviors we discussed. With your newfound knowledge, you'll recognize species by their movements, calls, and feeding habits, seeing the landscape through an ornithologist's eyes.

By the end, you'll understand why winter birding reveals things no other season can show you.

Come meet the toughest birds in New England, they're more resourceful than you ever imagined.
