Early Evening Bird Walk

Description

As the day cools, birds become more active, perfect timing for a guided walk at Ponkapoag Pond. The area offers a rich mix of waterbirds like herons and forest species such as thrushes. With open views of the sky, there's a great chance to spot raptors overhead and maybe even migrating Common Nighthawks. This walk welcomes all ages and experience levels, including families and first-time birders.

Instructions

Participants should meet in the parking lot for the Ponkapoag Golf Course.

The hike will take place in an open area where insects may be present, so wearing a hat, long pants, long sleeves, and applying bug repellent is recommended. Please dress appropriately for the weather, bring sunblock and a coat if needed, and wear comfortable hiking shoes. The first portion of the walk will be 0.5 miles along the paved golf cart path through the golf course. Once we reach the pond, we will not need to walk much further and can watch birds while being mostly stationary. Don't forget to bring water and binoculars for the best birdwatching experience.

Children are welcome but should be able to manage a longer walk. It is also okay if folks need to head out early. There are bathrooms in the golf Club House.
