Woodcock Walk in the Blue Hills

Description

As the light fades in late March, male American Woodcocks step into open clearings and begin a fascinating courtship display.

Head out onto the trails with a naturalist as the sun goes down to listen for the buzzy "peent" call, then watch for the twittering spiral flight that follows it. You will learn how these long-billed shorebirds of the forest floor find their food, why they depend on young forest and open clearings to breed, and what the Blue Hills offers them.

Sightings are never guaranteed, but late March evenings are prime time for the display.

Checking registration status.
