Dance of the American Woodcock

Description

On spring evenings, male American Woodcocks put on one of the most iconic courtship displays in the bird world: a buzzy peent from the ground, a spiraling flight high into the dusk sky, and a twittering tumble back to earth.

Start indoors at Arcadia with a presentation on the American Woodcock, their display, and the conservation concerns facing a species whose numbers have been slipping in many places. Then drive to the fields at Park Hill Orchard in Easthampton to look and listen for the dance as the light fades. Seeing and hearing this display in an open field at dusk is a magical experience not to be missed.
