Take your first step toward becoming a Joppa Flats education volunteer with these in-the-field trainings. Our education volunteers help staff and field teachers present programs to schools, groups, and families throughout the school year in a wide variety of environments.
Tuesdays, 10:00 am-1:00 pm
1/3/23: Local Raptors
Bald Eagles, Snowy Owls, and wintering hawks are common sights on the north shore. We'll spend part of this program birding by van to see these birds of prey in the wild.
1/10/23: Winter Birds and Banding
Storing seeds, finding shelter, and huddling together are some of the ways that birds can survive cold temperatures, snow, and wind. Let's go in search of titmice, nuthatches, and chickadees, and learn about winter bird banding onsite.
1/17/23: Coastal Winter Wildlife
From shorebirds, to sea ducks, to raptors, to harbor seals, the coast always has wildlife to find and learn about. We will visit Salisbury Beach State Reservation to find wildlife and look for animal tracks on the beach.
Tuesdays, 9:00 am-12:00 pm
3/28: Coastal Erosion & Salt Marsh Ecology
Living on the shore presents many challenges to both people and wildlife. We will visit Plum Island beach and the Joppa Flats salt marsh to learn about erosion, microplastics and weathering, and how we present these sensitive topics to school groups and families.
4/4: A Visit to the Bird Banding Station
Mass Audubon's Bird Banding Station collects data on migrating songbirds in spring and fall. We will vist the station to learn about this procedure and the benefits of the research that takes place.
4/11: Rocky Shore Tide Pools
The intertidal zone is the area between the high tide and low tide, where everything from periwinkles to sea urchins reside. On the beach, we will demonstrate how to find and identify marine organisms, discuss how these creatures are useful to humans, and find out how climate change is affecting this ecosystem.
Prior to the program, you will receive an email with information on where to meet, parking and facilities details, driving directions, and other guidelines.
Please dress for the weather with appropriate footwear.
Masks are required in Mass Audubon vans; they are otherwise optional.
