See bird banding up close and participate in citizen science! Joppa Flats Education Center, in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), operates a bird banding station on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge every spring and fall. The USFWS and Mass Audubon use date from the station to monitor species diversity, the movement of birds on the refuge, bird populations, and other factors.

During the Thursday evening session in this two-day workshop, you'll learn the basics of bird banding, strategies for identifying birds in the hand, and the many aids for aging and sexing these incredible animals. The Saturday session takes you out to the station, where you'll observe the banding process and assist with data collection.

Instructions and Directions:

Meet at Joppa Flats Education Center for both sessions. For the Thursday lecture, please bring your field guide. For the Saturday session at the banding station, bring your binoculars and field guide, and wear clothes and footwear appropriate for the weather and terrain. Protect yourself from biting insects. We'll travel by Mass Audubon van from Joppa Flats to the banding station.

Masks are optional indoors and outdoors; they are required in Mass Audubon vehicles. Anyone wishing to travel in a Mass Audubon vehicle must bring their vaccination record (actual or photo) for visual confirmation. Carpooling is encouraged for those who do not wish to travel in a Mass Audubon vehicle.

Mass Audubon cancellation policy: If you wish to withdraw less than seven days prior to the program, refunds cannot be issued. If Mass Audubon cancels the program, you will receive a refund in full.

Registration is required.
