Join Wayne Petersen for an afternoon workshop all about shorebirds. We'll begin in the Joppa Flats Education Center classroom for a slide presentation overview. You'll learn identification tips and life history information that will step up your ability to identify shorebirds. After the introduction, we'll travel down the street to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge to view a variety of sandpipers and plovers in the field. The refuge has extensive mudflats, salt marshes, and salt pannes which are all excellent feeding areas and roosting sites for long-range migrants. We hope to see Black-bellied and Semipalmated plovers, Greater and Lesser yellowlegs, Semipalmated and Least sandpipers, Short-billed Dowitchers, Willets, and more.
Meet at Joppa Flats Education Center for the classroom session. Afterwards, we'll travel by Mass Audubon vans to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Anyone traveling in a Mass Audubon vehicle must wear a mask and present their vaccination record for visual confirmation. Carpooling is encouraged for those who do not wish to travel in a Mass Audubon vehicle.
Wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather and the terrain. Bring a field guide, binoculars, and a scope if you have one. Bathroom facilities are available.
Mass Audubon Cancellation Policy: If you wish to withdraw less than seven days prior to the program, refunds cannot be issued. If we cancel the program, you will be refunded in full.
