South Florida is a birder's paradise, especially if you're a birder who loves Cuban sandwiches! There will be birds galore, beginning with iconic sites such as Sanibel Island and Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary; stopping to visit the Poisonwood groves of Key Largo and Everglades National Park; whisking through the Miami suburbs to find the resident quirky, exotic species; and ending in the rich aquatic beds of Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. If you haven't been to South Florida in a while, you will find some noticeable changes, as alligators are now everywhere and some birds that once were rare have recovered, such as the seeminly half-evolved Limpkin. The juxtaposition of vast sawgrass marshes dotted with tropical hardwood hammocks and dense but sometimes birdy urban habitats will provide us with plenty to ponder. Glorious waders such as Roseate Spoonbills and Reddish Egrets will amaze you with their beauty, and the Black Vultures will keep our eyes wide. Specialties, such as Short-tailed Hawk, Snail Kite, Snowy and Wilson's plovers, Burrowing Owl, and White-crowned Pigeon, will be our goals at specific sites. We'll even target the exotic Purple Swamphen, which looks like cartoonist Gary Larson's version of a gallinule. After this trip, no matter what relative you visit in Florida in the future, you'll also have lots of options for great birding on the side!
