You might find that gull identification is daunting: plumages change with age and season, and there's a big variety of species around, especially in winter. Dave and Dave can help you get it straight with their systematic approach to these common birds, using a Friday evening lecture to examine specimens and a Saturday field trip to sort out the gulls we find. We'll take you to harbors and coastlines in Newburyport and Gloucester, two of the greatest gull locations in Massachusetts. In addition to the more common species, target gulls will include Iceland, Glaucous, Bonaparte's, and Black-headed. We'll also take time to study the other wintering land- and seabirds we encounter.
Meet at Joppa Flats Education Center. On Saturday, we'll provide a continental breakfast. Dress for the weather and bring lunch, snacks, a field guide binoculars, and a scope if you have one.
