Gull identification can be daunting: plumages change with age and season, and there's a huge variety of species around, especially in winter. Learn a systematic approach to identifying these common birds from the experts. Examine specimens at a Friday evening lecture, and venture out on Saturday to identify gulls in the field. Visit harbors and coastlines in Newburyport and Gloucester, two of the greatest gull locations in Massachusetts. In addition to the more common species, target gulls will include Iceland, Glaucous, Bonaparte's, and Black-headed. We'll also take time to study the other wintering land birds and seabirds we encounter.
Meet at Joppa Flats Education Center. On Saturday, we'll provide a continental breakfast. Dress for the weather and bring lunch, snacks, a field guide binoculars, and a scope if you have one.
