Maple Sugar Saturdays at Ipswich River

Special Event: Saturdays, March 7, 14, and 21

As winter days grow longer and begin to warm, but nights still dip well below freezing, the maple trees awaken from their winter slumber. When the sap begins to flow, staff and volunteers at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary begin preparing for the age-old tradition of maple sugaring.

Sugar house and buckets collecting tree sap

Get a taste of this seasonal phenomenon during Maple Sugar Saturdays. On three Saturdays in March, you can sign up for a deliciously immersive, hour-and-a-half experience.

  • Stroll through the woods on a small group guided walk to learn how to spot a sugar maple and see traditional tapping and sap collection in action.
  • Step inside the sugarhouse and watch the magic happen as sap transforms into golden syrup.
  • Get crafty in the nature center, which will be stocked with activities and games
  • Warm up by the fire pit or in our cozy, heated barn, where live music sets the mood and maple popcorn, sweet treats, and good company await.
