How Wildwood Overnight Camp Stands Out Amongst Sleepaway Camps

March 18, 2026

For many kids, summer is simply a break from school. For campers at Wildwood Overnight Camp, it’s something much more.

Nestled on the shores of Hubbard Pond, Mass Audubon's flagship sleepaway camp experience offers all campers the chance fully immerse themselves in the natural world—and discover parts of themselves they didn’t know existed along the way.

These five ways show how Wildwood stands out amongst sleepaway camps.

1. Nature Experts and Immersive Nature Experiences Spark Lifelong Curiosity

At Wildwood, nature isn’t just the backdrop—it’s the main event.

Throughout their stay, campers explore forests, wetlands, and fields alongside experienced and enthusiastic naturalists. They investigate wildlife habitats, learn about plant adaptations, and discover the incredible diversity of life around them. Over time, campers develop a strong sense of place, and a deep relationship to the land they are living on. They learn which trail leads to the best sunset view, where salamanders hide under forest logs, and which quiet corner of the pond warms up first on sunny afternoons.

With the support of a statewide team of conservationists, educators and naturalists, Wildwood staff have a deep knowledge of the world around them and thus facilitate science-based, eye-opening hands-on experiences that stay with campers for years to come.

2. Small Groups Turn Strangers into Lifelong Friends

Wildwood’s close-knit camp community helps campers bond with ease. Campers come from across the country and world, and find themselves experiencing the joy of summer together at Wildwood.

Each rustic cabin or platform tent houses just 4-7 campers, creating a small, supportive unit where everyone gets to know one another without the stress and pressure of a big group.

When kids get their first taste of living, exploring, and playing closely with peers outside of school or structured extracurriculars, they often find themselves forming new friendships—some that last a lifetime.

3. Teen Adventure Trips Make the Wilderness Your Playground

Wildwood offers added opportunities for older campers to push boundaries and discover new confidence in a safe, supported environment through Teen Adventure Trips

Led by experienced guides, these trips explore beyond camp trails and into the wild landscapes of the Northeast. Campers paddle remote waterways, hike scenic overlooks, and learn essential outdoor skills along the way. The adventures challenge teens to step outside their comfort zones while still supported, guided and cared for by peers and mentors.

By the end of the journey, teens return with more than just great stories—they come back with new independence, stronger leadership skills, and the confidence to tackle whatever life may bring.

4. Family Camp That Brings Everyone Closer

Did you know Wildwood isn’t just for kids? During Family Camp sessions, parents, grandparents, and children experience the magic of camp together: eating in the dining hall, living in rustic cabins or tents and enjoying the stunning Wildwood campus.

Without the distractions of daily routines and technology, families relax and reconnect with nature, reaping all the benefits of Wildwood, and, of course, connecting with each other.

5. Unique, Supportive Experiences that Build Independence

In the screen-free, nature-based, supportive and inclusive environment that is Wildwood, campers feel safe and adventurous—the perfect combination to find how they shine.

For some campers, it’s discovering they can make the biggest splash leaping off the giant blob into the lake or uncovering an affinity for archery when that arrow first hits the bullseye. For others, it’s finding they’re not actually afraid of heights as they swing through the trees during ropes course or discovering their voice while singing songs around a campfire lighting up the night. For some, it's simply learning they love the silence of the woods on their favorite trail or playing catch on the beach while watching the sunset over Hubbard Pond.

No matter who you are, or what you discover you might love, Wildwood gives kids the space they need to sparkle.

Protect Wildwood Camp

For generations, Wildwood has helped young people discover the wonder of nature and build lifelong connections to the outdoors. Now, Wildwood’s future is at risk. A planned housing development next door would fundamentally disrupt camp. We need your help to secure Wildwood’s future for years to come. Help us raise $250,000 by March 31 to protect the Wildwood experience.
