Joppa Flats Education Center is doing its part to leave a lighter footprint on the environment by utilizing green technology. Highlights include our "green" Education Center building and our electric car charging station.

Conserving Energy

  • Energy and lighting audit completed and recommendations implemented
  • Additional insulation has been installed and the building has been airsealed
  • All incandescent light bulbs have been replaced with LED bulbs
  • Occupancy sensor controlled lighting
  • Electric car charging station installed
  • Refrigerator has been replaced with EnergyStar model
  • Replaced computer monitors with energy-efficient monitors
  • Programmable thermostats installed
  • Electric-powered property management equipment purchased and in use

Buying Electricity Generated from Renewable Sources

Generating Renewable Energy

Electric Vehicle Charging Station

  • Two Level 2 J1772 connector plugs that are compatible with all makes and models of EV (Tesla owners may need to use an adapter to connect their vehicle).
  • Each plug provides about 25 miles for every hour of charging time
  • ChargePoint Network
  • $0.28 per kWh

  • High-performance building envelope

Conserving Water

  • Rainwater collection system (1,200 gallon storage capacity) installed, and toilets flushed with rainwater – over 18,000 gallons harvested annually
  • 5 dual-flush toilets installed
  • Waterless urinal installed
  • Low-flow showerhead installed
  • Added bottle filling attachment to existing drinking fountain to encourage the use of refillable water bottles

Enhancing Energy Education

  • Interpretative displays of energy and water conservation features – electricity and water production amounts posted in lobby
