2011 Bird-a-thon Results & Highlights

Mass Audubon’s 28th Bird-a-thon was a wonderful success. We raised over $175,000 which will, sustain programs and wildlife sanctuaries throughout the state. An impressive total of 633 enthusiastic birders participated in Bird-a-thon this year, as well as an additional 38 “virtual” birders who helped raise funds.

The weather began with a warm calm on Friday evening, and turned into a foggy and cool Saturday morning along the coast with clearing by mid morning and comfortable conditions for most of the day inland.

A total of 270 species during the 24-hour event were seen. Among the more notable species recorded were:

  • Greater White-fronted Goose
  • King Eider
  • Pacific Loon
  • Black Vulture
  • Rough-legged Hawk
  • Sandhill Crane
  • Black-headed Gull
  • Eurasian Collared-Dove
  • Chuck-will’s-widow
  • Red-headed Woodpecker
  • Yellow-throated Warbler
  • Connecticut Warbler
  • Clay-colored Sparrow
