Flock Party: Bird Banding Demo

Description

Go behind the scenes of bird research with a special 20-minute visit to the sanctuary's banding station. Discover how scientists safely capture, band, and release migratory songbirds as part of a long-standing effort to monitor bird populations on Cape Cod.

The sanctuary's banding legacy dates back to pioneering research conducted by Dr. Oliver Austin Jr. from 1928-1958, and in 2014 the project was re-established to continue studying songbird migration under the leadership of Licensed Master Bander James Junda.

Meet James and the research team, learn about modern banding methods, and gain insight into how this careful, data-driven work supports bird conservation across the region. Because the welfare of the birds is our highest priority, we cannot guarantee that live birds will be observed in hand.

This demo is free and offered as part of our Flock Party open house event. The banding station is wheelchair accessible, with additional seating available upon request. For questions or to discuss accommodations, please contact the sanctuary at 508-349-2615.
