Description
During Mass Audubon's Superbowl of Birding, teams compete to spot as many bird species as they can in 12 hours throughout Rockingham County, NH, and Essex County, MA.
The Big Sit team, an intentionally inclusive and accessible team for people with disabilities, will compete in the 'Sitting Duck Award' category, observing and tallying birds from the Joppa Flats Education Center.
Team members can bird from the floor-to-ceiling windows in our accessible lobby, from a second-floor indoor bird blind (accessible via elevator), and a large, flat, grassy backyard right behind the building. Chairs will be available in all locations.
No previous experience is needed, and binoculars and scopes are available to borrow.
This program is Free thanks to funding from the Alvarium Foundation.

What To Expect
Joppa Flats Education Center is an accessible building with two accessible bathrooms that are multi-stall and are not gender neutral. During the event, team members can spread out and do not need to stay together during the competition. There will be a designated quiet space away from the birding area if you need a break.
Team size is limited to seven, but team members can bring along additional friends or family to keep them company and enjoy the bustle and excitement of the competition.
Teens 16 or 17 years of age can participate if accompanied by a parent/guardian. The parent/guardian will not be required to register for the event.
Team captain, Kari is an autistic birder whose work in the birding community has focused on accessibility and a greater understanding and inclusion of neurodivergent individuals in natural spaces and the outdoors.
