Arctic Waterbirds at Castle Island

Description

Castle Island sits on the edge of Boston Harbor at the opening of the bay. In winter, that exposed position hosts an impressive gathering of Arctic waterbirds settled in for the season.

Walk the flat, open loop with a Boston Nature Center guide, scanning the jetties and offshore waters for Barrow's Goldeneyes, Long-tailed Ducks, Purple Sandpipers, Snow Buntings, and Glaucous Gulls.

With Rough-legged Hawks and Bald Eagles patrolling overhead and Brants riding the waves below, this compact site delivers some of the most exciting cold-weather birding in the city.

All experience levels are welcome.

This program is free for members and nonmembers thanks to the Brookline Bird Club.

What To Expect

This program takes place at Castle Island in South Boston, not at the Boston Nature Center. The route follows a flat, open, paved loop.

Castle Island is fully exposed to the harbor and can be significantly colder and windier than nearby inland areas. In the event of severe weather conditions, the program may be cancelled or postponed.

More details on what to bring and expect will be emailed to you ahead of the program.
