Description
Castle Island sits at the edge of Boston Harbor at the opening of the bay. In late fall, that exposed position draws an impressive parade of Arctic waterbirds heading south for the winter. Walk the flat, open loop with a Boston Nature Center guide, scanning the jetties and offshore waters for Barrow's Goldeneye, Long-tailed Duck, Purple Sandpiper, Snow Bunting, and Glaucous Gull among many others.
With Rough-legged Hawks and Bald Eagles patrolling overhead and Brant riding the waves below, this compact site consistently delivers some of the most exciting cold-weather birding in the city.
All experience levels are welcome. This program is free thanks to the Brookline Bird Club.

Dress warmly—Castle Island is exposed and can be significantly colder and windier than nearby inland areas. Bring a water bottle.
Meeting point: Sullivan's Castle Island parking lot, 2080 William J Day Blvd, South Boston, MA 02127. Drive Day Blvd. to the end and park as close to Sullivan's Castle Island restaurant as you can. By public transit: MBTA #7 and #9 buses serve Castle Island (some walking to the meeting point required). Look for the group just in front of the restaurant.
