In this two-part workshop focused on nature essay writing, you'll learn what makes a powerful nature essay and have the opportunity to practice your craft with writing prompts. In Session One, we'll discuss essays by contemporary nature writers (registrants will receive a few short essays ahead of time). We'll discover what makes these essays work, and talk about techniques you might use in your own writing. We'll touch on some of the various essay forms as well. Next, we'll practice our own nature writing with prompts. There will be optional sharing of our work with time for positive, encouraging feedback for those writers who wish to receive it. At the end of Part One, we'll talk about our writing assignment to prepare for Session Two.
In Session Two, we'll start out by discussing how the writing process went during the week, including inspirations, challenges, discoveries, and successes. We'll each share our work out loud and have time for positive feedback (for those writers who wish to receive it). After sharing and feedback, we'll have time for questions and a brief discussion about the submission process for those who are interested in working toward eventual publication in magazines or journals. Every participant will receive a list of resources related to nature writing.
